Essential safety tips for finding roommates safely and avoiding scams.

Finding the perfect roommate is exciting, but your safety should always be the number one priority. Here we share our best practices for staying safe during the process.

Before the First Meeting

Verify Their Identity

  • Request a video call before meeting in person
  • Ask to see an official ID (in a secure way)
  • Check social media profiles
  • Never share sensitive financial information right away

Do Your Research

  • Search the person’s name on Google
  • Verify that the property actually exists
  • Read reviews of the building or area
  • Be wary of offers that seem too good to be true

During the In-Person Meeting

Meet in a Safe Place

  • First meeting should always be in a public place
  • Let a friend or family member know where you’ll be
  • Bring your phone fully charged
  • Trust your instincts - if something feels wrong, leave

Inspect the Property

  • Visit during the day
  • Bring a friend if possible
  • Verify that the locks work
  • Ask about building security

Warning Signs

Be suspicious if someone:

  • Refuses to do a video call or meet in person
  • Asks for money before signing a contract
  • Is unusually eager to close the deal
  • Can’t provide rental documentation
  • Avoids answering direct questions
  • The “landlord” is always “out of the country”

Protect Your Finances

  • Never send money by bank transfer to strangers
  • Don’t pay deposits before seeing the property in person
  • Demand a formal lease agreement
  • Verify the real owner’s identity
  • Use secure and traceable payment methods

Digital Safety

  • Use only Roomio’s messaging system initially
  • Don’t share your personal number too soon
  • Be careful with links people send you
  • Report suspicious behavior immediately
  • Protect your personal information

Safety Checklist

Before committing, make sure you have:

  • Met the person via video call or in person
  • Visited the property physically
  • A signed lease agreement
  • Verified the landlord’s identity
  • Felt comfortable with your decision
  • Discussed rules and expectations clearly
